1. Different Composition and Structure (Most Fundamental)
- Ordinary ABS: Acrylonitrile-Butadiene-Styrene Blend, Uneven Distribution of the Rubber Phase (Butadiene), and Inconsistent Particle Size. Purpose: To Ensure Strength, Toughness, and General Cost-Effectiveness.
- Electroplating-Grade ABS: Specially Optimized Rubber Phase with Smaller Particle Size and Uniform Distribution, and Higher Butadiene Content (Typically 15%~22%). Purpose: To Allow for Uniform Etching During Coarsening, Forming Fine Micropores for Strong Coating.
2. Surface Performance Differences
- Ordinary ABS: Prone to flow marks, shrinkage marks, pitting, and obvious seam lines, unsuitable for electroplating.
- Electroplating-grade ABS: Denseer surface, high gloss, no obvious defects, uniform micropores after roughening, bright after electroplating, no peeling or delamination.
3. Electroplating Process Adaptability (Decisive)
- Ordinary ABS: Uneven etching during roughening → poor coating adhesion → prone to blistering, peeling, chromium loss, and pitting. Basically unsuitable for electroplating. - Electroplating-grade ABS: Specifically designed for chemical roughening → uniform micropores → strong coating adhesion, passes thermal shock, cross-cut adhesion, and salt spray tests.
4. Flowability and Molding Properties
- Ordinary ABS: Wide flowability range, some are hard and brittle, some are soft.
- Electroplating-grade ABS: Moderate flowability, easy to fill, less prone to internal stress, reducing cracking after electroplating.
5. Heat Resistance and Strength
- Electroplating grade ABS generally has slightly lower heat resistance (due to a higher rubber phase).
- Ordinary ABS has better strength and rigidity. For electroplating, heat resistance is less important than bonding strength; for structural components, strength is paramount.
6. Price
- Electroplating grade ABS is 1000-3000 RMB/ton more expensive than ordinary ABS.
- Higher-end electroplating (e.g., mirror bright chrome, automotive parts) is more expensive.
7. Typical Applications
-Ordinary ABS: Appliance housings, toys, general structural components, daily necessities, non-electroplated products.
-Electroplating grade ABS: Automotive trim parts, bathroom faucet covers, appliance buttons/decorative rings, e-cigarette housings, high-end electroplated parts.
